The Castell is a human tower built by people of both sexes and all ages, strongly rooted in their town or neighborhood, who engage in spectacular performances during the Fiesta Mayor de Gràcia, in Barcelona, with the aim of erecting and then orderly dismantle constructions of the greatest possible complexity, which can reach heights of nine to ten floors.
The groups of castellers are called colles and the castells are divided into several parts: the pinya or base, formed by various concentric cordons of people; the tronc, visible trunk of the multi-storey tower; the pom de dalt or upper floor; and the enxaneta, the child who climbs to the top and raises his arm without the castle collapsing. The optional reinforcement groups are called folre and manilles.
In 2010 they were recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
